What is Standards?

In short

Standards are the safety tests a helmet or lock must pass before it can be sold, and the label tells you who checked it.

A standard is a written test an independent body applies to a helmet or a lock, so you can judge safety without trying it. The name of the standard shows how hard the test is and who ran it, rather than a brand's own promise.

Labels differ by market, so two brands can both pass a helmet test and still list different ones. Bern lists cpsc, en 1078 and nta 8776, while P2R Sports and Specialized list cpsc and cpsc. Scott lists en 1078, and Kryptonite's locks list sold secure and art.

Check the list before you buy, especially if you ride to work and the helmet or lock is your main protection.
